![]() ![]() The gator was starting to look worn and i travel enough to warrant to a big dog setup and I upgraded to the SKB iseries and it is a monster case but it feels a little over kill. It's gone on 3 (4 legs at a time) international trips to not luggage friendly airports and a dozen US domestic trips and I've had no issues excluding the time Qatar airways lost my guitar for a few days. I got a Gater TSA hard case and just checked it. Depending on your airline and class of travel you may only be allowed 1 item so much more fragile items like tablets and laptops go into your checked bags. Still there was a flight where I had to gate check it and pray. I have a mono gig bag, and I've traveled with it doing the whole sweet talk the gate ladies and paying for upgraded seating to be first on the plane. Modern guitars have adjustable truss rods, which are factory-calibrated to balance the natural forward-pulling tension of the of the strings. Taylor guitars comments: The idea that you should slacken the strings before flying (or extended periods of non-use) is a leftover notion from a bygone era, when guitars were built without adjustable truss rods, which made it more difficult to counteract the tension of the strings on the neck. You shouldn't need to loosen the strings either. Personally I'd bring it in a hard case and don't mention it to the check in ladies, bring it to the gate, and if the flight attendants insist on not letting you on then gate check it or something, but in my experience they're fine with it since it fits in the overhead compartment and people can still put their backpacks on top of it and such (for a flat electric guitar case anyways) It fit into the overhead compartments alright. This was on various Chinese airlines though. I'm not sure what airline you're flying but the rest of the times I took a hard case up to the plane and the flight attendants were fine with me taking it on despite it being longer than is normally allowed. These were international flights between the US and China, and I just plastered it with fragile stickers I've checked cheaper guitars a few times with some American airline, probably Delta and it was alright but the case got one of its corners broken at some point. ![]()
